2024-2025 PreK Child Counts Reporting Guidance and Deadlines
  • The Office of Early Learning (OEL) has released the 2024-2025 PreK Child Counts Reporting Deadline and Guidance memo.

  • Please refer to this memo for guidance on ensuring accurate and complete data are reported. Errors in coding may result in a reduction in the district’s reimbursement amount.

  • All PreK student counts must be inputted monthly via the Student Information Repository System (SIRS).  To calculate the final payment for the 2024-2025 program year, OEL will look at the data sets from October and March and select the higher of the two. The final data set will be pulled on March 12, 2025.

  • LEAs receiving SUFDPK funding are also required to input their child counts via the SED Monitoring and Vendor Performance System on or before the close of business on March 12, 2025.

Please contact your OEL Liaison at 518-474-5807 or OEL@nysed.gov with any questions.

National Technical Assistance Center (NTAC): The Power of Self-Reflection and Daily Reflective Practices

Wearing many hats (or a big heavy one) day after day can weigh you down. It can feel like you hardly have time to catch a breath, much less engage in a meditation ritual. However, carving out time for self-reflection is vital for maintaining great leadership and educational practices. According to a resource from Walden University, self-reflection can be defined as taking time to think about your thoughts, behavior, motivations, and actions. In today’s fast-paced world, it can seem difficult to slow down and examine ourselves with intention. Don’t worry, though — this practice doesn’t have to mean adding another task to your to-do list! Let’s explore the benefits of self-reflection, and how you can integrate it into your everyday life:

  • Self-reflection is key for great leadership. With reflection, strong leaders become aware of their own strengths and weaknesses, sharpen their ability to adjust to new situations and information, and can set their own egos aside and view situations from a neutral perspective.

  • Educators also benefit from this practice! According to a study from the International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning, reflection that requires educators to continually examine their own thoughts, perspectives, biases, and actions makes it easier for them to develop new knowledge and skills.

  • What could this look like for you as a leader? Try different self-reflection methods to see what works best for you. Maybe it’s taking a walk and recording your thoughts in a voice note. Does a certain time of the day or week work best? A short daily practice or a longer weekly practice? Digital tools or good ol’ pen-to-paper? Ask questions: What went well? What did I learn? Where could I improve? Acknowledge your strengths and weaknesses, and determine a course of action. Should you seek new skills? Become a mentor or mentee? Set new goals?

  • What could this look like for you as an educator? In an Edutopia article, an educator tells how she benefitted from just five minutes of daily reflection for the entire school year. What time of day did behavioral issues arise most frequently? What seemed to cause the most distraction? After you’ve asked yourself what problems occurred, move on to the next step: brainstorming solutions and looking forward.

Whether you’re leading an out-of-school time program or a student activity, reflection can support your professional growth and performance. “The 10 Pillars of Servant Leadership” in our downloadable Becoming a Leader Toolkit states that self-awareness and reflection are key to managing yourself and your relationships with others to keep the team moving toward their goals.

Program Spotlights

The Community Impact & YMCA of the Twin Tiers

"The impact that Hinsdale's 21st CCLC program has on the community with our program is due to the various activities we have to offer that promote personal and social skills, as well as, problem-solving, self-control, self-esteem, and responsible decision-making.

We also instill the YMCA's four core values of Honesty-Caring-Respect-Responsibility on a daily basis."

Young Entrepreneurship at Oneida MS 21st Century

Oneida MS 21st Century after-school students spent months developing and creating food truck business proposals. The companies ranged from Latin Asian bowls to Wings n’ Thangs and a variety of Middle Eastern to gluten-free items. The young entrepreneurs developed the concepts, names, logos, menus, and pricing and designed the interior / exterior of their businesses on wheels. As a culminating experience, a local food truck stopped by and students ordered food items and interviewed the owner. The best part of this project-based learning was watching the students present their innovative business proposals and their passion that shined through their presentation.

Comprehensive Youth Development provides young people at Manhattan Comprehensive Night & Day High School with an introduction to the world of work while building job readiness skills so that they will be prepared for success. This spring, we collaborated with corporate partners and Board members to host workplace visits and corporate volunteer events where employees talked to students about career paths and worked with them individually on their job interview skills and résumés. These events included professional development sessions at Goldman Sachs and at Deloitte’s annual Impact Day, a Men’s Leadership event at BNY Mellon, PVH panels on legal and accounting careers, and a visit to VaynerX to learn about working in media.
