RoS Spotlights

Waverly Central School District

Kimberly Rymer, a Site Coordinator at Waverly Central School District, shared about how the after-school program has ‘gone to the dogs’ in the absolute best way possible!

Students in the community service learning club had been collecting toys and treats to donate to Stray Haven Humane Society and SPCA. The entire REACH program got a surprise visit recently from the director of Waverly Stray Haven. The director talked to the kids about what the organization does and ways that students can help out and volunteer their time with the animals.

Way to go Wolverines!

Dunkirk City School's School 7 After-School Program

Marcella Dolce, School 7 Site Coordinator at Dunkirk City School, shared about a project her after-school program worked on this year. School 7 After-School Program promoted healthy lifestyles by running a turkey trot with all after-school participants and many of their families. As part of the project, the after-school students, families, and staff collected donations to provide Thanksgiving meals to families in need. With all of the generous donations and the partnership of the Outpour Project, we were able to provide turkeys to 21 families and full holiday meals to 7 families.

Great work, School 7!

NYC Spotlights

The Manhattan Comprehensive Night & Day High School's BioBuilderClub Team

The Manhattan Comprehensive Night & Day High School BioBuilderClub Team, led by dedicated science teacher Alfred Lwin, completed a year-long synthetic biology project, a new approach to lead detection using a fluorescent sensor. Each year, the BioBuilderClub, made possible by 21st CCLC funding, researches and designs an experiment, travels to Boston to build and test the experiment in a professional lab, and presents their work at the BioBuilder Final Assembly with teams from all over the country. This year, MCNDHS was the only New York State school that participated in the Final Assembly.

MS 322's Gardening Club

The Gardening Club at MS 322 is a partnership with a local organization, I challenge Myself (ICM) and the NYC Restoration Project, which provides an outdoor hands-on scientific experience that helps students learn about the environment and promotes healthy living. This exciting opportunity will teach students how to plant and grow organic food in a sustainable way in an urban neighborhood--from seedlings to harvesting. All this through a methodology that fosters collaborative work while promoting self-learning, critical thinking, creativity, and curiosity.
